Everyone takes a similar amount of frames to fire a shot, but not too long an animation so the games still feel quick. And since the stage and damage design takes into account the animation frames, it never feels like the enemies move faster than you. Metal Slug also has the better animation of the 2 for the 2D games. I also think that outside of one big misstep Meta Slug has maintained its quality while COntra kind of had a row of poorly received games that kind of helped kill the franchise. While Contra seems to be more so based on trial and error, especially for the early few games. IMO I find Metal Slug the better series, the enemy and stage design are vastly better so as you get more skilled you end up doing much better in subsequent runs.
